2007 TAF Award: Humanities Achievement Award Father of Taiwan Children’s Choir – A Biography of Prof. Lu Chuan Sheng
Master Lu Chuan Shan was born in 1916 in Taichung County Kamiokande Fengyuan Sangkung Collier Triangle (Now Taichung County Sangkung Rural Triangle communities) as the third child. He is the descendant of Mr. Lu Bian-Nan who was the owner of HsiaoYun Villa - also known as the First First Book Bank of Taiwan. His parents were devoted Christan and they often took Mar. Lu to participate church choir, which inspired him to study music later on.
1923 - At 7, admitted to Shore Side Elementary School 1929 - Admitted to First Boy’s High School in Taichung 1933 - Studied piano with Mrs. Chin Hsin Jeng
1935 Immediately after the graduation from high school, he went to Japan to attend the prep school in Orient Music School. His major was piano and was taking lessons from 井上定吉. His dream to become a concert pianist shattered due to an accident to his finger. This unfortunate event marked a new beginning in his life. He changed his major to Vocal music with a minor in Piano Theory and Composition. He was taking lessons under阿部英雄. The curriculum of choral singing then had a tremendous influence in his later devotion of lyric composition and choral singing education. His extra curriculum activities included singing for theatrical play (1939), auditioned to become Olympic Choir member, admitted to NHK Broadcast Choir member Group F(1940). He was very active in the "Taiwanese Music Major Students Forum" (1936), Local Huang His, Chang Hua Music Concertr (1938), became acquainted with the Taiwanese composers. After graduating from Music School, Master Lu became professional singer. He played leading role in the Japan 東寶 tTheater and singing part time at NHK Choir.
1943 - Master Lu returned to Taiwan and resided in Da Dao Chen, Taipei, where his influence for Taiwan Folk song started to take roots. He and a group of his friends that enjoyed singing later organized and established a "厚生 Men's Choir," At the same time, he composed two folk songs: Paddy Field of June for Chia Yi and Train thru the Tunnel (diu-diu-dang-ah) for Yih-Lan. These became the pioneer pieces for Choir folk song in Taiwanese.
Master Lu directed Chung Guang Broadcast Station Choir, Taiwan Cultural Association Choir. 1950-1951 - Master Lu taught Ching-Hsiu Catholic Girls High School. 1951-1960 - Taiwan Education Association 1957-1991 - Jung Sing Children’s Choir 1958-1986 - Shi-Chien Home Economic College
Master Luis is renowned for his dedication in promoting Children’s choir for merely half of the century.
Master lu has composed more than two hundred pieces of folk songs. Among those songs, the following 3 are the most popular ones.
In May 1945 during WWII, the allies bombarded Taiwan heavily to fight against Japan. Master Lu evacuated his wife and 3 months old infant to the countryside of Feng Yuan, his hometown. He stayed in Taipei and worked in Taipei Broadcast Bureau. As the night fell, Master Lu’s longing for his wife and new born son grew deeper by the day. He asked his father in law, who was a pastor, wrote the verse. The widely acclaimed – “Voice for the Formosan Parents – the Lullaby came to shape. “Do not Keep Fish under the Goblet” was intended to homogenized / ease the ethnic gap on the island after the 228 massacre. Open up the Window inside your Heart is yet another piece composed with Dr. Wang Hsu Hsiung. The song was meant to consort the young men who moved from rural area to city because of the social structure transition. It is now a very popular piece for choir repertoire.
Please check this part, the order of the year of Lu, Chuan Shen Songs might be wrong. CK Master Lu has held concert in 1965, 1975,1981,1982,1985,1987, 1991,1994,1996 to present his composition. He published "Lu, Chuan Shen Songs Set" (1992), " Lu, Chuan Shen Songs Set 1" (1996), " Lu, Chuan Shen Songs Set 2" (1993), " Lu, Chuan Shen Songs Set 3" (1999), " Lu, Chuan Shen Songs Set4" (1999), " Lu, Chuan Shen Songs Set 5" (1996).
Because of his contribution to music education over 50 years, abundant composition and music arrangement, particular his indigenous folksy styles: these achievements emblem him as the Father of Taiwan Children’s Choir. Master Lu received the following outstand awards:
· Music Composition Award from Chinese Culture and Art Association in 1990 · National Cultural Award from the government in 1991 · special achievement honor for the Fourth Annual Golden Songs and Lyric of Republic of China.
Master Lu came to the United States to stay with his family in 1991.
