ACCEPTANCE SPEECH OF LIANG-TSENG FAN
First, let me express my deepest appreciation to Mr. & Mrs. Wang, the founders of the Taiwanese-American Foundation, who made this award possible, and Dr. Liao of the University of Chicago who nominated me. Second, I would like to thank my family and relatives who supported me throughout my life. They are represented here by my younger sister, Liang-Ing and her husband, Tsai Tsui-Hsien; two cousins; a nephew; and last but not least, my wife, Eva, who has devoted her entire married life of 43 years to raising family as well as to assisting me professionally. While they are not here, I would like to mention my younger brother, Liang-Shing, and my youngest sister, Liang-Whey, and her late husband, Andrew Lee. All of them have long struggled for the political, economic and social welfare of Taiwan. Third, I am indeed privileged to have two of my friends of 60 years here; we were classmates at Sin-teh Middle School. Finally, I urge all my former students and associates who are present to stand up and be recognized. As you know, without their enthusiastic participation in my research and subsequent collaboration, my accomplishments would never have been possible. Besides being active in teaching and research, they occupy prominent leadership or managerial positions in the fields of public health, green-technology development, pollution control and eco-system protection. I, myself, have long dreamed to restore “Ilha Formosa”, i.e., beautiful island, to its original beauty. Being black-listed by the government for nearly 30 years, I failed to realize my own dream. I am very proud that my dream is being carried out by these former students and associates.
