SOCIAL SERVICE
AWARD
LAUREATEChi-Chao Wu 吳繼釗

Ms. Wu was born
in Chungking, China in 1948. She spent her childhood in a military household
village in Taiwan. She graduated from Chung Hsing University with a law degree
and has since been a high school teacher.
Special Achievement
She married her college sweetheart Feng-Hsi Cheng who was
born severely handicapped. After sharing five sweet and happy years of
marriage together, her husband passed away. To the memory of her husband, she
established Cheng Feng-Hsi Cultural and Educational Foundation in 1977 from
the royalty fees of Mr. Cheng's book "A Wrecked Boat in the Ocean" and from
proceeds earned by the movie made from his book. This is the first civil
organization in Taiwan dedicated to the social services for the handicapped
and the poor. This was the beginning of more than twenty years' civil service
to the needy, the disabled, the sick, the aged and the unfortunate in Taiwan.
Her determination and many subsequent civil projects awakened asocial
conscience in Taiwan and changed the fates of many handicapped and
underprivileged.
