LAUREATE
Sheng Hsien Lin 林聖賢

Born in
Changhua in 1937, Dr. Lin graduated from National Taiwan University with a BS
degree and MS degree in Chemistry, and from Utah University with a Ph.D. in
Physical Chemistry. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Colombia University, and
became a professor of Chemistry at Arizona State University. He is currently
Director and Special Distinguished Research Fellow of Institute of Atomic and
Molecular Science, Academia Sinica and also serves as a professor of Chemistry
at National Taiwan University.
Special Achievement
He has devoted himself to the research and the teaching of
physical chemistry and theoretical chemistry for over twenty-nine years. As a
theorist concerned with molecular and atomic phenomena, he developed brilliant
new theories and interacted particularly well with experimentalists. He
contributed greatly in gas phase spectroscopy, solid state structural and
electronic effects and surface science, and is widely recognized as a Nobel
class scientist by four Nobel laureates and other scientists in the world. He
has authored more than three hundred papers and five books and had received
numerous prestigious awards. After returning to Taiwan in 1993, he has
gradually transformed the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Science gradually
into a world class research institute.
