LAUREATEShi-Ming Samuel Chou 周烒明

Dr. Chou
was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1930. He is a graduate of National Taiwan
University, and he received his MD from Wisconsin University. He was head of
the Neuropathology Section of Cleveland Clinic foundation, Cleveland, Ohio and
professor and head of Neuropathology at West Virginia University Medical
School, Morgantown, West Virginia. He is currently Director of Basic Research
at ALS & Neuromuscular Research Foundation, California Pacific Medical Center
in San Francisco.
Special Achievement
Dr. Chou is an internationally known neuropathologist. His
pioneering works have laid foundation for recent understanding of viral
infections in the pathogenesis of several neurodegenerative disorders. He is a
devoted scientist who has written more than 300 papers and has been invited to
give more than 50 talks about his research around the world. He won the
Matthew T Moore Award from the American Association of Neuropathologists in
1971 and was a runner-up for the Weil Award in 1981. As an active researcher,
he was elected Vice President of the American Association of Neuropathologist
in 1987 and served on several national and international committees. In
addition to his scientific achievements, he earnestly participates in American
Taiwanese society activities, and was founder and president of the North
America Taiwanese Medical Association and the North America Taiwanese
Professor Association.
