SOCIAL SERVICE AWARD LAUREATE
Jun-Ming Kao 高俊明

Dr. Kao was
born in 1929. He graduated from Tainan College with a degree in Theology, and
later he received his Ph.D. in Theology from Knox College of Theology in
Canada. He was chief executive officer of Taiwan Presbyterian Church, and
president of Yishan Colloge of Theology.
Special Achievement
He worked in Yishan Colloge of Theology in Hualiang for
thirteen and half years, focusing on spreading the gospel to Taiwanese
aborigines and exemplifying acts of humanitarianism. He organized and led
Taiwan Presbyterian churches to launch the historical "Declaration of Nation"
in 1970, published "Our Advocate" in 1975, and announced "Declaration of Human
Rights" in 1977. These declarations came from his concerns about Taiwan's
future and his belief in God. Thus, Dr. Kao helped waken Taiwanese awareness
and directed the subsequent democratic movements in Taiwan. In 1980, he was
sent to prison due to the Formosa Incident. In prison, he continued spreading
the gospel and his benevolence with the other fellow prisoners and wrote to
comfort their families. After he was released, he unchangingly continued
displaying his humbleness, patience, diligence and forgiving nature. His
loving heart and righteousness set a truly good example of social services and
humanitarianism.
