HUMANITY AWARD LAUREATE
Wen Yeh Jian 江文也

Mr. Jian was
also known as Ben-Ya Koh. He was born in Tamsheuy, Taipei Hsieh in 1910,
graduated from Wu Zhang Industrial College, Tokyo, Japan with a degree in
electrical engineering, and later graduated from San Yeh Musical School,
Japan.
Special Achievement
Mr. Jian was a talented Taiwanese music composer. During
the 1930s, he earned second place in the Japan National Musical composer
competition four times (during the Japanese occupation, non-Japanese natives
could only aspire to the second place in any of its national competitions). In
1936, his music piece " Taiwan Dance" earned a special award in the1936 Berlin
Olympics. Two years later, his piano concerto "Duan Chang" earned the composer
award at the International Vienna Music Festival. He was then recognized as
the "Chopin of Taiwan" and the most brilliant composer in Asia. In 1938, he
left Japan for Beijing to teach and continued his creation of folk music.
Subsequently, he completed a music piece "Grand Opening of Confucius Temple",
Music piece #53, Piano concerto #59, 150 pieces of Taiwanese folk songs and "
Mountain Ah Li Orchester". When Yeh-Jian died in 1983, the year he earned the
TAF Award.
