1983  HUMANITY AWARD LAUREATE

Knei Yang 楊 逵

Mr. Yang was born in Shinghua, Tainan Hsien in 1905; graduated from Tainan First High School, and later from Japan University in the department of literature.

Special Achievement

He was a famous writer and a peaceful social movement activist. During the Japanese occupation, he joined a peasant organization, the Taiwan Culture Association, as well as the Taiwan Literature Alliance. In 1932, he wrote his award-winning novel, "Newspaper Delivery Men", which was published in Taiwan People Daily, and later in Tokyo's "Literature Commentary". In 1935, he published a monthly periodical, "New Taiwan Literature". Meanwhile, Mr. Yang was the chief editor of " Taiwan Literature" and " Chinese Literature Series". In 1945, he launched the weekly journal, "Yi Yang". In 1948, he became a famous columnist of "Li Shing". In the 1950s, he wrote many glamorous literature pieces, such as "Unbrokenable Roses", " Wedding of Mother Goose", " Village without a Doctor", " A Model Village", " Buffalo", and also many poems and plays. In 1982, he participated in an International literature writing forum sponsored by Iowa University. Knei Yang passed away in 1984.
